Eseohe Ojo: Digital Tattoo Contributor

What is your primary role in the Digital Tattoo project?
My primary role is Project Coordinator which involves communications, assisting with project coordination and promotion, social media outreach and engagement as well as content creation – writing and researching blog posts, creating or contributing to learning resources.

When did you start working with the Digital Tattoo team?
I started working with the team in May 2019.

How did you get involved in Digital Tattoo?
I applied through the UBC Work Learn program initially for a different position within the team but was considered for the Coordinator position for which I was a better fit! I have experience working in communications as well as the digital rights/internet freedom space and was excited to continue doing this while studying Public Policy and Global Affairs at UBC.

Why do you believe Digital Tattoo is an important initiative?
It is student centred! Technology and the Internet are built into the fibre of the present and coming generation. Most young people today either do not remember the world before the Internet or have never lived in such a world. I believe that this is a unique opportunity to help raise a generation of people who think beyond functionality, convenience and the fun of the Internet.

It is a chance to engage and build the right ideals into internet use. Initiatives like Digital Tattoo, with its student focus, get young people thinking beyond the opportunities for interconnectedness that the Internet presents in favour of looking at other aspects and implications – privacy, representation and reputation, consciousness and duty of care; all of which will improve not just the social interactions but also encourage legal and ethical behaviour.

What do you hope that readers will get out of Digital Tattoo?
I hope that readers will become more aware of how their digital activities shape and affect their lives and others’ and therefore, become more conscious of what they do online and how they are represented. I also hope that it will be a useful resource they can refer back to or share with friends when faced with real life dilemmas around their digital activities.

What’s one thing you can’t recommend enough?
Exploring, learning new things and even occasionally stepping out of your comfort zone – whatever this might look like for you. For me, it’s often through reading that I explore and learn but I will occasionally cave to the Vancouver culture, get out of my comfort zone and explore outdoors.

What is your favourite way to relax?
Mostly reading or watching TV shows and on a good sunny day, spending time at the beach.

What’s something people might not know about you?
I’m a Ravenpuff. 😁😁😁
